A Double Double is a No No.
Double double coffee is an iconic Canadian drink made with two sugars and two creams, first originated by Tim Hortons. It’s a popular choice for Canadians.
If you are Canadian or have spent any amount of time in Canada, you already know what a double, double is. Canadians penchant for coffee shops is well known and a double/double is a quick way to let the server know that you want two milks or creams and two sugars in your coffee.
To which I say: “blaghhhh”
When I was younger I was never much of a coffee drinker. But I do remember my grandmother taking us one day to the local ice cream parlour. If I remember it correctly, there was a special on coffee-flavoured ice cream. So that is what we all got.
All that I can remember after a couple of bites of the ice cream, is the total revulsion that washed over my body. This ice cream was flavoured like double/double coffee. I could not stomach it.
Flash forward to my last year of university when I had a major thesis and several essays all due within the same two weeks of each other. I had been a tea drinker through university but it wasn’t giving me the kick I needed to work late into the night. My roommate broke out a large can of instant coffee. Living in residence, we did not have access to milk and sugar at 3 in the morning, so I drank it black.

Needless to say, I fell in love with black coffee wondering where it had been all my life. I had been to Spain and Morocco refusing to drink coffee there because of my experience as a youngster. Now I could not get enough of the black liquid. The darker the better.
As I pointed out in my previous blog, I have recently found Turkish coffee. I love the strong flavour. I love a good espresso. I have just recently started exploring these. In a way, this is the reason I started on this journey with my coffee club. I hope to explore and find coffees for all of us (and some teas).
I am hoping you hop on for the journey and share some of your coffee experiences.
Now just as I was writing this, this report from CNN in the US showed up in my email. It purports the health benefits of black coffee. As if I needed convincing! The link is attached below!
This month, I am going to wander around Toronto trying to find the best espressos…. Talk to you soon.

Al of Big Al’s Coffee Club. From the time in my youth, when I would lay on our garage roof watching planes traverse the skies above me, I knew I wanted to see the world.
My passion grew after spending a semester of my university days in Barcelona. I spent more time on trains and buses or coffee houses than I did in class.
After earning my BA from Carleton University, life got in the way. But I did find time to graduate again from George Brown in Fitness and Lifestyle Management and then work my way through most of a degree in Sports Administration. However I needed to find work and pay for all this education!
It wasn’t until my “middle age” did I start exploring the world again. First, transversing the US and Canada to take part in tennis tournaments. Then later to complete my spectator “grand slam” of tennis.
I accomplished this while earning my certificate in photography from Toronto Metropolitan University. I am now combining the two passions and now sharing with you my many lessons learned. And my passion for coffees and teas.
