Introduction

If you’re like me, you love coffee. If you’re also like me, you love trying different kinds of coffee. I’m always curious to see what new flavours and roasts are out there. This winter, I have been checking out some blends from Kicking Horse Coffee. Now, I’m not sure what kind of horse they’re kicking, but this coffee is good!. Their rich flavours are perfect for mornings or afternoons.

I will preface this article with the fact I am far from a coffee expert.  But I am a coffee lover.  The more I try different brands and blends, the more I am beginning to discern different flavour notes.

What are my requirements for a good cup of coffee? When I open the package, I love to take a deep inhale.  Is the aroma woody, nutty? Fruity? Is it sweet?  Then, does this aroma carry over to the brewing process? I love nothing better than being woken up to the scent of coffee brewing on my Hamilton Beach coffee maker.

Taste is the most important requirement. I like bold but not overpowering flavours. I want to taste the coffee in the moment but not a couple hours later.

Kicking Horse Coffee Co.

This winter I have been checking out the blends from Kicking Horse Coffee Co.  They are a great story.  Starting roasting in their garage in 1996 to opening their own coffee shops to today where their manufacturing plant is an employer of note in British Columbia.

Confession: I have not as of yet made it through all of their blends.  The three roasts in my rotation right now are: Kick Ass; Grizzly and Three Sisters.  In these winter months, Kick Ass is my main choice.  During the holiday season it was Grizzly Claw and Three Sisters was my fall and will be my spring brew.

Kicking Ass

On their website, they describe Kick Ass as a sweet, smokey and audacious. Kick Ass is one of the signature roasts. It has a deep flavour with hints of chocolate malt, molasses, licorice and is slightly earthy. I love to open the package on cold winter mornings and breathing in the aroma.  I have been caught doing this without brewing a pot of coffee!

Kick Ass is 100% certified organic. An arabica bean sourced from Indonesia and South America. It is my wake up coffee.  I find the flavour gets me going and the aftertaste for me is next to nil.

Grizzly Claw

During the holiday season, Grizzly Claw was the blend of choice.  It is rich and decadent. There are hints of dark chocolate. I found it very lightly sweet. The aroma did have the slight chocolate scent. In particular, I found Grizzly Claw to be a great after dinner coffee especially where it could compliment the dessert.

Three Sisters

The blend that first got me onto the Kicking Horse blends was their Three Sisters blend. It was my fall drink and once there is hint of spring in the air, I will switch back. It is a nice and smooth medium roast. Great for sitting out on the balcony on sunny day.

When you first open the package, I think you will surely get the notes of fruit, cocoa and sweet tobacco. My mouth starts to water just taking in a deep sniff of these beans.  Come on springtime!

Conclusion

If you’re like me and enjoy a good dark roast coffee in the colder months, then I suggest you check out Kicking Horse Coffee. They have a great selection of blends that will keep you warm all winter long. I’ve been drinking their Kick Ass and Grizzly Claw blends lately, but I think their Three Sisters blend will be my go-to for spring. Thanks for reading and happy caffeinating!
